How to Reduce Your Monthly Energy Bill

Posted on

Saving money is a constant goal of people from all walks of life, all around the globe. Reducing your energy consumption is one of the best ways to save money. However, doing so leaves many people scratching their heads. It may seem like the only option is to turn off the air conditioning or heat and suffer through unsavory temperatures. Fortunately for all of us, that's not the only way to save money on your monthly energy bill.

How You Can Reduce Your Monthly Energy Bill

There are several things you can do to reduce your monthly energy bill:

Insulation. One of the best things you can do to save money on energy is to ensure that you have insulation installed in your dry wall, especially in outside walls. Whether you're worried about keeping the heat in, or keeping the heat out, insulation will help you expend less energy to maintain an ideal temperature in your home.

Air Conditioning. Another way to get the most out of your energy consumption is to keep all of the vents in your home open, free and clear of any debris. They should be cleaned regularly by a professional to ensure that there are no blockages. Additionally, air filters should be changed every month to keep the house free from airborne debris, and to keep the air conditioner from working hard than it has to.

Heat Reduction. Reducing the amount of heat produced by your washer and dryer is a fantastic way to reduce your monthly energy bill. In fact, heating the water that's used in your washer is responsible for the majority of the energy used by the machine. Whenever possible, wash your clothes with cold water. You'll be surprised how much you save.

Consumer Electronics. One last thing you can do to save money is to turn off your consumer electronics when they are not in use. Always-on desktops and modern gaming consoles consume more power than most people think. A great trick to make this easier is to plug everything into a power strip, then simply turn off the power strip when you leave the house.

Your Electric Company May Offer Discounts

Call your power company as soon as you can and ask them if there are any discounts for using energy during non-peak hours, which is usually before noon and after 7:00 PM. Most power companies will offer a plan that allows you to save money during non-peak hours. Once on this plan, schedule your life around it. Only do laundry and wash dishes during your new non-peak hours. You'll be surprised how much money this will save you.
